The Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) was founded in 1999 by directors of oceanographic institutions around the world as a forum to promote and advance the observation of the global ocean. POGO is a UK-registered charity with member institutions from around the world, and works closely with other international and regional programmes and organisations.
POGO seeks to expand international support for ocean observing, through innovation of the ocean observing system, capacity development and outreach/advocacy.
United Nations Climate Change Meeting: UNFCCC COP25
COP25 (25th Annual Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) took place in Madrid, Spain, from 2-13 December 2019. Over 25,000 participants registered for COP25, including people representing specific parties, scientists, business groups, non-governmental organisations and journalists.
POGO’s exhibition booth, entitled ‘POGO – Observing our Ocean’, presented the ‘Three Pillars’ of POGO’s Mission: Developing capacity, innovative technology and international partnerships towards world-wide cooperation for a sustainable, state-of-the-art global ocean observing system which will serve the needs of science and society by supporting climate research and decision making.
The exhibit was in place for 2 days, during which time POGO representatives Lilian Krug and Laura Ruffoni, together with NANO alumna Meri Bilan (University of Salento), had the opportunity to interact with the audience in multiple languages and attend side events related to the Ocean Action Day. POGO Members’ representatives, Paula Sierra-Correa (INVEMAR) and Tony Worby, (CSIRO), attended the event through POGO’S accreditation.
