Multiscale Oceanography: From Micro to Macro (2025)

Interdisciplinary training initiative designed to build the capacity of early-career researchers and graduate students working in marine sciences. Hosted by CCMAR, Portugal.

The course “Multiscale Oceanography: From Micro to Macro” is an interdisciplinary training initiative designed to build the capacity of early-career researchers and graduate students working in marine sciences. Hosted by CCMAR – University of Algarve (Portugal), the course integrates field, laboratory, and computational approaches to study marine systems across spatial and temporal scales.

Participants will explore key topics in oceanography, including chemical and biological processes, ecotoxicology, biogeochemical cycles, and the use of modern observational platforms. The training will cover diverse methods such as nutrient analysis, pH and alkalinity measurements, molecular tools for environmental monitoring, optical imaging techniques, and biomarker-based assessments of pollutant effects. These components will be linked through real-world case studies and group projects addressing the impacts of environmental stressors on marine ecosystems.

A highlight of the course will be an oceanographic field trip aboard a research vessel, where students will collect water and plankton samples using CTD casts and net tows, applying their learning in an operational setting.

The course supports the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development by promoting integrative, hands-on training that connects molecular-scale processes to global-scale patterns in the ocean. With support from POGO, three travel bursaries will be provided to participants from developing countries, helping foster equity and inclusion in marine research.

The course will take place in October 2025 in Faro, Portugal.
