GOOD-OARS Summer School 2025

An immersive week-long event aims to elevate understanding of ocean deoxygenation and acidification

The GOOD-OARS International Summer School will take place at the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), nestled in Penang National Park, Malaysia from the 4th to 11th November 2025. Organized by the Global Ocean Oxygen Decade (GOOD) and Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programmes under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science, this immersive week-long event aims to elevate understanding of ocean deoxygenation and acidification, which are pressing threats to marine ecosystems worldwide.

Targeted at graduate and doctoral students, as well as early-career ocean scientists, the program offers a balanced blend of multidisciplinary training, from foundational theory and physical-biogeochemical interactions to hands-on fieldwork, lab analysis, modelling, and stakeholder engagement. Hosted in a pristine tropical marine environment, participants will benefit from unparalleled exposure to both cutting-edge research and experiential learning opportunities. The curriculum encompasses lectures on marine oxygen loss, acidification, and multiple stressors; practical modelling and observation exercises; and workshops on science communication, data ethics, and biogeochemical feedbacks. The itinerary also features poster sessions, oral presentation exercises, and fostering engagement and professional networking.

Applications were evaluated and 40 scholars have been selected, with a strong emphasis on gender and geographic diversity. The GOOD-OARS Summer School 2025 presents a unique opportunity for emerging ocean professionals to deepen their interdisciplinary expertise, collaborate with global experts, and contribute meaningfully to safeguarding marine ecosystems amid climate change. We thank POGO for supporting this event and funding selected POGO affiliated participants to attend this summer school.
