The 12th POGO Annual Meeting was hosted by the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) in Seoul, South Korea, from 24 to 26 January 2011.

28 of the POGO member institutions were represented, as well as representatives from other organisations such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, National Science Foundation, the North Pacific Marine Science Organisation, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation, the Ocean Observatories Initiative and the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (see participants’ list).

The Seoul Declaration was written by the participants and signed by the Chairman of POGO, outlining the importance of ocean observations and data and technology sharing between observation networks. Particular emphasis was placed on the network of time-series observation stations OceanSITES, monitoring ocean acidification, ocean observations in the deep ocean, polar seas and semi-enclosed basins, and the development of Oceans United as a global forum for dialogue within the marine scientific community.

A press release was also issued by KORDI and received an impressive response by Korean and international media.

A number of suggestions were put forward on how POGO could help the University of Concepcion in their efforts to recover some of the research infrastructure that was damaged or lost during the earthquake and tsunami in 2010.
