The Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) was founded in 1999 by directors of oceanographic institutions around the world as a forum to promote and advance the observation of the global ocean. POGO is a UK-registered charity with member institutions from around the world, and works closely with other international and regional programmes and organisations.
POGO seeks to expand international support for ocean observing, through innovation of the ocean observing system, capacity development and outreach/advocacy.
OceanObs’19 took place in Honolulu, and attracted around 1,500 participants. The conference statement can be found here. The agenda was mostly structured around break-out sessions, with the plenary sessions used mainly for reporting back on the break-outs and discussion of the outcomes. The exhibition and poster sessions took place during the middle 3 days.
POGO, an official sponsor of the event, was represented by POGO’s CEO, Dr Sophie Seeyave, and Communications Officer, Fiona Beckman. Around a dozen POGO members were also present at the conference. Sophie was a co-organiser and speaker at the Capacity Building session, and invited to speak at a Side Event on an “All-Atlantic Ocean Observing System (AtlantOS)”. She also co-chaired a GEO Blue Planet Steering Committee Meeting, chaired a meeting of POGO’s UN Decade Working Group, and attended the POGO Biological Observations WG Meeting on the Saturday after the conference.
The POGO exhibition booth, managed by Fiona, focused on the 3 Pillars of POGO, showcasing POGO’s capacity development programme, outreach/advocacy efforts and ocean observations/innovation theme. We also used the event as a platform to launch the new Oceanscape portal.
In addition, the 30 second video below, highlighting the Three Pillars of POGO, was produced for, and launched at, OceanObs ’19.
