Eugenia Bogazzi

Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Argentina University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, USA

Mrs. Bogazzi is in a doctoral program at Universidad Nacional del Comahue, Argentina. Her dissertation topic concerns the dynamics of harvested populations of the Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) as related to overlaying frontal systems. She will be undergoing training on computational approaches to numerical modelling of physical processes and their interactions with biological processes at the Marine Sciences department of the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Werner. Duration of the training will be one month.

Tulay Cokacar

Institute of Marine Sciences, Middle East Technical University, Turkey Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environment, Gif-sur-Yvette, France

Ms. Cokacar is a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Marine Sciences, Middle East Technical University. She has been using SeaWIFS data in analysing Emiliania huxleyi blooms in the Black Sea.

She will be undergoing training on implementation of an improved atmospheric correction algorithm for SeaWIFS data with regard to mineral dust over the Eastern Mediterranean, under the supervision of Dr. Cyril Moulin at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environment, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Duration of the training will be one month.

Andres Javier Jaureguizar

Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo Pesquaro (INIDEP), Argentina Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia, Canada

Lic. Jaureguizar is involved in Ph.D. research into fish assemblages at Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo Pesquaro (INIDEP).

He will be undergoing training on correspondence between spatial and temporal patterns of fish assemblages as related to environmental patterns, under the supervision of Dr. Kees Zwanenburg at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia, Canada. Duration of the training will be two months.

Nuzhat Khan

National Institute of Oceanography at Karachi, Pakistan Griffith University, Queensland, Australia

Ms. Khan is a research officer at the National Institute of Oceanography at Karachi, Pakistan, where she has been studying the effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on marine environments.

She will be undergoing training on state of the art techniques for qualitative and quantitative determination of POPs with the guidance of Professor Des Connell, School of Public Health, Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. Training will be for two or three months.

Konstantin Kirpichev

Russian Federal Institute of Marine Fisheries & Oceanography (VNIRO), Russia AWI, Germany

Mr. Kirpichev is a researcher at the Russian Federal Institute of Marine Fisheries & Oceanography (VNIRO) in Moscow, Russia. He is a specialist in organic matter in Russia's internal seas.

He will be undergoing training on handling and discussion of methods for the determination of organic matter and nutrients in polar seas, with training provided by Dr. Gerhard Kattner of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany. Duration of the training will be two months.

Mariela Kogan

National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP), Argentina University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada

Ms. Kogan is engaged in Ph.D. thesis research at Argentina's National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP), involving biodiversity of microzooplankton in the Rio de la Plata.

Ms. Kogan will be learning Quantitative Protargol Staining procedures for identification of common marine and estuarine planktonic ciliates. Dr. Denis Lynn of the zoology department at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, will be overseeing Mariela Kogan's training for two months.

Viacheslav V. Kremenetskiy

P.P Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russia Institut de Ciencies del Mar, Spain

Dr. Kremenetskiy is a physical oceanographer with the P.P Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow. He is interested in mathematical modelling of Black Sea water dynamics.

His fellowship will take him to the Institut de Ciencies del Mar in Barcelona for two months, where he will be studying the relationship between local atmospheric forcing and sea current patterns of the northwestern Mediterranean shelf, under the supervision of Dr. E. Garcia-Ladona.

B. Meenakumari

Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, India Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia, Canada

Dr. B. Meenakumari is head of the Fishing Technology Division of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology at Cochin, India. Her interest lies with the fluctuations of the oil sardine fishery along the southwest coast of India.

Dr. Meenakumari will be undergoing training on recent techniques in Remote Sensing for application to fisheries, both for explaining past fluctuations and to provide optimum future use
of fisheries resources. Training is to take place at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia, Canada, under the guidance of Dr. Trevor Platt. Duration of the training will be three
months.

Pradeep Ram

National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), India Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES), New York, USA

Mr. Ram is a Ph.D. student specialising in marine microbial ecology. He works at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Dona Paula, Goa, India.

Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Cole at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES) at Millbrook, New York, Mr. Ram will be investigating new perspectives and techniques in modelling bacterial mediated organic carbon cycling processes for two months.

Mini Raman

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Nova Scotia, Canada

Ms. Raman is a scientist with the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. She is involved in modeling primary production using ocean colour data.

She will be undergoing training in measurement and analysis of spectral absorbtion coefficients of marine particulate and dissolved substances for development of regional bio-optical algorithms, under the supervision of Dr. Trevor Platt at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Duration of the training will be three months.

Mathieu Rouault

University of Cape Town, South Africa PIRATA FR 11 cruise, France

Dr. Rouault is an expert on ocean atmosphere interaction, working in the Department of Oceanography, University of Cape Town. He is interested in the PIRATA (Pilot Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) project, and is Chair of of the PIRATA-SEE (South-East Extension) committee, which is examining the possibility of extending PIRATA moored ATLAS buoys to the waters off South Africa, Namibia and Angola.

His fellowship will enable him to join the PIRATA FR11 cruise, and receive training in all aspects regarding deployment of the ATLAS system. The training will last approximately one month.

Sergey Vostokov

P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russia Institute of Ocean Sciences, Canada

Dr. Vostokov is a research scientist at Moscow's P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. His area of interest is marine phytoplankton productivity and the influences of macro and meso scale hydrodynamic ocean processes.

He will be learning advanced technologies used in biological observations and sample processing, as well as receiving training in remote sensing data analysis, particularly of SeaWiFS data and regional algorithms. Training will be for two months at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, British Columbia, Canada, under the supervision of Dr. Jim Gower.

Charles Magori

Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Kenya University of Hawaii, USA

Mr. Magori is a research officer at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute in Mombasa, and is the Regional Coordinator for sea-level monitoring in Eastern Africa.

He will be undergoing training at the University of Hawaii Sea Level Center on various aspects of sea-level data acquisition, analysis and interpretation. Training will take approximately three weeks, with the guidance of Dr. Mark Merrifield.
