POGO-IOC-SCOR Fellowships 2004

Dr. Cumino's interests lie in molecular methods for the taxonomic and phylogenetic characterization of the photosynthetic picoplankton of Argentinean Sea. Her fellowship takes her to Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) at Barcelona, Spain for a month of training under the supervision of Dr. Ramón Massana Morela.

Dr. Eghtesadi Araghi is a regional coordinator for the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network. He will be undergoing training on quantifying Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure dynamics and effects in the Persian Gulf, supervised by Dr. Douglas Haffner of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER), Canada. Duration of the training will be three months.

Mr. Ghaffari is a research scientist in physical oceanography at the Iranian National Center for Oceanography (INCO). His fellowship will be used for two months of training in current and physical parameters observation in fixed-point moorings and time series analysis, under the supervision of Dr. Miroslav Gacic at the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) in Trieste, Italy.

Mr. Guneroglu is involved in fisheries engineering at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in Trabzon, Turkey His fellowship took him to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), Canada where he took part in three months of training involving ocean colour, primary production and remote sensing. The host supervisor at BIO was Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath.

Dr. Haryono is the head of the Hydrographic Surveying Laboratory at Gadjah Mada University
in Indonesia. The fellowship enabled him to attend a hands-on training programme on data
management using CARIS software, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Razali Mahmud at the
Centre for Hydrographic Studies, University of Technology, Malaysia. The duration of the
training was three months.

Dr. Joseph is involved in Argo data analysis and quality control at INCOIS. He is taking part in three months of training in delayed mode quality control, under the guidance of Dr. Howard J. Freeland at Canada's Institute of Ocean Sciences.

Mr. Jyothibabu's interests lie in microbial biogeochemistry. The POGO-IOC-SCOR Fellowship enabled him to visit the Southampton Oceanography Centre for three months, during which time he analysed molecular diversity of bacteria, and trained in fluorescence microscopy, molecular staining and enumeration of bacteria. Prof. Peter Burkill supervised this training.

Dr. Malarvannan is interested in the development of pharmaceutical compounds from marine biotoxins. The fellowship will enable him to travel to New Zealand's Cawthron Institute, where he will take part in a three month training program involving monitoring and analysis of marine biotoxins under the supervision of Dr. Lesley Rhodes.

Ms Moise works at the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology in their zooplankton sampling programme. The fellowship enabled her to travel to Mauritius' Shoals Rodrigues Marine Research Training & Education Centre, where she underwent training on zooplankton identification and data management, as supervised by Tom Hooper.

Mr. Perez is involved in research at Cuba's Fisheries Research Centre. His fellowship was used to undergo training in time series analysis and primary processing of data received from mooring systems, CTDs and ADCP. His supervisor for this training was the Universidad de Concepción's Dr. Rubén Escribano.

Mr. Pranowo is employed at the Research Center for Maritime Territories and Non-Living Resources. The fellowship took him to Hobart, Australia for two months, where he learned about Argo float preparation, deployment, and data quality control, under the supervision of Dr. Helen Phillips of CSIRO Marine Research.

Ms. Stanganelli is connected with the Antarctic Atlas Project. Her fellowship enables her to travel to the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Institute at Canada's Carleton University for three months, where she will be trained in object oriented GIS modelling as applied to the impact of el Niño in southern ocean ecosystems. She will be supervised by Dr. D.R.F. Taylor.
