COP 24

United Nations Climate Change Meeting: UNFCCC COP24

COP24 (24th Annual Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)) took place in Katowice, Poland, from 3-14 December 2018.

POGO joined forces with PML, BIOACID (A GEOMAR-led project), the UK Ocean Acidification Research Programme, and GOA-ON to co-host an ‘Ocean Acidification & Interacting Stressors’ exhibition stand, drawing attention to the four major stressors on the world ocean – Acidification, Warming, Deoxygenation, Sea Level rise – and giving delegates the opportunity to learn more about the causes, effects, impacts and options for action. The exhibit was in place for 2 weeks, with POGO, NANO and PML representatives interacting with delegates in multiple languages. With such a variety of backgrounds and languages on the stand, it was possible to engage with enquiries on all levels, and we received a number of requests for further information from a number of participants. The stand received, among others, a visit from UK Defra Minister Dr. Therese Coffey.

This year, POGO also co-hosted a Side Event on “Enhancing ocean and climate observing in developing nations using low-cost technologies and capacity building”, in collaboration with an NGO in Bangladesh, “An Organisation for Socio-Economic Development (AOSED)”.  It was chaired by Sophie Seeyave, with presentations by Alessandro Crise (OGS), Eva-Maria Brodte (AWI), Shamim Arfeen (AOSED) and Mizanur Bijoy (NCCB-Bangladesh). This led to some interesting discussions about the role of ocean observations in countries particularly vulnerable to climate change, and possible future interaction between AOSED and OpenMODs.

Sophie Seeyave also gave a presentation during a PML Side Event on “The challenge of a changing Pacific Ocean: understanding impacts, observing networks and building capacity to inform policy” in the Pacific and Koronivia Pavilion.
