TREVOR-SAFARI Symposium & Training on Observing marine ecosystem structure and function: from microbial communities to fisheries and human health

The second TREVOR Symposium will be organised jointly with the third symposium of SAFARI (Societal Applications in Fisheries and Aquaculture using Remotely Sensed Imagery), and held at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) of the Indian Agricultural Research Council in Kochi from 4 to 6 November 2026.

The TREVOR (Trends, Reflections, Evolution, and Visions in Ocean Research) Symposium is an international scientific meeting honouring the legacy of the late Professor Trevor Platt FRS FRSC, a pioneer of ocean science with a long-standing commitment to capacity building, and a former Executive Director of POGO, who helped shape the POGO capacity building portfolio in the early years of the organisation. The second TREVOR Symposium will be organised jointly with the third symposium of SAFARI (Societal Applications in Fisheries and Aquaculture using Remotely Sensed Imagery), another initiative led by Prof. Platt, in Kochi, India. The combined TREVOR-SAFARI Symposium will be held in Kochi from 4 to 6 November 2026. By bringing together two community-building initiatives with deep roots in the Global South, this edition represents a deliberate step towards embedding ocean science capacity where it is needed most.

A defining feature of the TREVOR Symposium is the training course that precedes it. The 2026 training, organised by the International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) at INCOIS in partnership with multiple institutions, takes place from 27 October to 3 November 2026, ahead of the symposium, with a follow-on field trip and data analysis session in Kochi, which will be organised by the Chemical Oceanography Department of Cochin University. The training course focuses on observing marine ecosystem structure and function, from microbial communities to fisheries and human health, and blends an online lecture series with an in-person week at INCOIS in Hyderabad and a field component in Vembanad Lake, Kerala. The curriculum covers biogeochemistry, ocean optics, and ocean colour remote sensing, equipping participants with practical skills to monitor primary productivity, harmful algal blooms, carbon cycling, and marine ecosystem health in a changing climate. The in-person training will be preceded by an introductory online training component with about 10 lectures, from July-September 2026.
